[The Lord is close to the broken hearted]

Biblehub.com describes the Greek word for weakness this way:  asthéneia (“weakness, sickness”) refers to an ailment that deprives someone of enjoying or accomplishing what they would like to do.

“It focuses on the handicaps that go with the weakness.  It expresses the weakening influences of the illness or a particular problem, especially as someone becomes wrongly (overly) dependent.”

Given our current situation, the word “dependant” has really been speaking to me.

I get it. If I wasn’t getting it before, I received a heartful of what it means to delight in weakness when my mother-in-law’s first words, just out of the hospital, were “I had such a wonderful time in the hospital.”

The three of us (Dad, Andrew and I) all chuckled at Mom’s words.  Only Mom would be so delighted at her stay in the hospital.  She’d had a heart attack, but there’s nothing wrong with my mother-in-law’s heart. It was in the right place.

Being in the hospital is a joy to her because it gives her the opportunity to minister to people. (Apparently she also enjoys hospital food…hehe.)

If anyone’s a people person, it’s Mom.  She loves to love, and she isn’t afraid to show it.

While in the hospital she gets to know her neighbors and the nurses, she prays for those who need prayer, and she wraps her loving arms around those who are distraught. When we arrived to visit her, she was out of bed and warmly greeted us all.

Most people would be itching to get out of the hospital, but my mother-in-law accepts her weakness (or dependence).  She isn’t concerned about herself.

Like Paul the Apostle and Jesus, She’s too busy thinking of others. ❤ (2 Corinthians 11:28

When Mom’s in the hospital, God is near to the brokenhearted, (Psalm 34:18), for when she is weak, Jesus’ love shines through her.

PRAYER REQUEST: Just after I posted this we received word that Mom’s headed back to the hospital.  They don’t think she’s had another heart attack, but she’s not feeling well, and her thinking has been really confused.

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” –2 Corinthians 12:9-10

  1. This is just what I need at the moment! Thanks for sharing, Tina. Your mom is adorable. She is a blessing to everyone around her and I bet she had touched a number of lives during her stay in the hospital. Sure, God used her during her hospital stay to make other people feel His presence.

I hope she gets well soon and will be well always. God bless you and your entire family!

    1. Thank you so much! She’s supposed to be coming home again tonight. We’re not too sure what’s going on there. Her blood pressure was low this morning and she had pains in her arms, but as far as we know she didn’t have another heart attack. Hopefully we’ll know more tonight.

    1. Thanks Sally! She’s a real keeper, and loved dearly. Could you please pray for her. We just received word that she’s heading back to the hospital. They don’t think she’s had another heart attack, but she’s not feeling well, and her thinking has been really confused.

      1. Thanks so much, Sally. Dad emailed that her blood pressure was 140/80 this morning, and she had pains her arms. At the hospital her blood pressure was 133/81. Dad says that they gave her a saline shot and her blood pressure was 121/76 when he came back home. That’s all the info we have for now. She’s supposed to be coming home tonight.
